Rain in Kerala

The month of March announces the arrival of summers for the southern parts of India. However, pre-Monsoon season also makes an onset during the second half of the month as a semi permanent trough forms over the southern region of the country.

However, we can see that March is turning out to be a good period for Kerala as pre-Monsoon showers have arrived early this year. Till March 14, Kerala received 8.3 mm of rain against 10.6 mm and was deficient by 22%.

Now the state of Kerala has been receiving on and off light to moderate rain and thundershowers activities since last few days. The reason for these rain activities was the persistence of a cyclonic circulation over Southeast Arabian Sea off South Karnataka and Kerala Coast.

In the span of last 24 hours, Alappuzha recorded 16.3 mm of rain followed by Kottayam 8.4 mm and Punalur 12 mm.

Currently, a trough is seen forming from Interior Andhra Pradesh to Kerala across South Interior Karnataka. Therefore, we expect light to moderate rain and thundershowers to continue for the next 48 hours.

Thereafter, this trough will become insignificant and the rain intensity will reduce. Isolated rains are expected to continue over the entire state then.

Meanwhile, maximum temperatures will remain in the mid-30s and minimum temperatures will also lie between lower 20s and mid-30s.
