After witnessing dry weather conditions throughout the month of December, rainfall activity has finally made an appearance over the northeastern region of the country. Usually, Northeast India observes rains throughout the year with a few breaks in between.
Good rains made a comeback over some of the states of the seven sisters in the last 24 hours. In fact, some areas did record heavy rainfall as well. In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Saturday, Kailashahar saw 67 mm of rains, Silchar recorded a whopping 43 mm of rainfall along with 43 mm of rains as well in Lengpui.

Other areas to have recorded good rains include Imphal 41 mm, Aijal 19 mm, Cherrapunji 20 mm, and Shillong 1 mm.
These rains were attributed to the presence of a depression which was persisting over Northwest Bay of Bengal, moving north northeastwards. Thus, rainfall activity was on a slight high over many areas.

Now, the weather system has weakened significantly and has become a low-pressure area. In fact, the system now lies over North Bay of Bengal and will continue to lose strength.
Thus, rainfall activity will continue over another 24 to 36 hours over many parts of Northeast India particularly over South Assam, Tripura, Manipur, and Mizoram. In fact, good rains over a few areas of Nagaland cannot be ruled out.
After 24 to 36 hours, rains will reduce significantly over Northeast India as the system will fizzle out.
