Tamil Nadu has been recording light to moderate rain and thundershowers since the last 24 hours. Pamban recorded 30 mm of rain in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, followed by Karaikal 11 mm, Atiramapattinam 5 mm, Tondi 4 mm, Thanjavur 3 mm, and Cuddalore 2 mm.

The capital city of Chennai too recorded very light rains to the tune of 0.6 mm. These rains can be attributed to the cyclonic circulation marked over Sri Lanka and adjoining Tamil Nadu.

According to Skymet Weather, the system has now become less marked and now could be seen as a trough of low only. This trough is extending from Equatorial Indian Ocean to North Tamil Nadu.

Thus, light to moderate rain and thundershowers would continue across the state. However, moderate rains would be confined to South Coastal Tamil Nadu and Nilgiri areas. Meanwhile, northern areas would see light showers only.

Talking about Chennai, the state capital would also see light rains an thundershowers for the next 48 hours. The sky conditions would remain partly cloudy to cloudy across the state.

This Northeast Monsoon has not performed up to the mark. Tamil Nadu which is the main beneficiary in terms of rains is also highly deficient. The cumulative rainfall deficiency for the state from October 1 to December 22 stands at 22%.

Chennai that records over 60% of its annual rainfall during these three months is largely deficient to the tune of 55% during the same duration.
