The heatwave has abated from most parts of Maharashtra, including from Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada, bringing in much needed relief. However, isolated pockets of Vidarbha still reeled under heatwave conditions. Meanwhile, heatwave like conditions prevailed in some part of Madhya Maharashtra.

This abatement of heatwave is due to the scattered rains that occurred over parts of South Madhya Maharashtra and South Vidarbha. These pre-Monsoon spells have led to drop in the maximums that are now settling in mid-40’s.

Within the span of 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Sunday, Nagpur recorded moderate rains of 35.8 mm, Satara 33 mm, Kolhapur 7 mm and Wardha witnessed 1.6 mm of light traces of rains.

As per Skymet Weather, now, a trough can be seen extending from East Madhya Pradesh to South Madhya Maharashtra across Vidarbha. Therefore, we expect scattered to moderate rains to continue over parts of South Konkan and South Madhya Maharashtra in places like Sangli, Satara, Kolhapur, Vengurla, and Ratnagiri. On the other hand, Mumbai and Pune would continue to remain dry but not for too long.

These rains would further result in dropping the temperatures leading to the abatement of heatwave from almost all the parts of Maharashtra within the next 24-48 hours.

Gradually, rains are likely to increase over the southern parts of Maharashtra by May 30. Moreover, by June first week, scattered moderate to heavy rains are possible over Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan.

At this stage, let us see the impact of this weather on the agriculture belt of Maharashtra:

Farmers are advised to go for deep ploughing with a chisel plough or subsoiler to break the hard-subsurface layers of the soil for easy germination and root penetration and to increase the infiltration rate of the soil.

Farmers are advised to continue nursery bed preparation with the help of the pre-Monsoon showers for Kharif rice and ragi in South Konkan. In Marathwada, before mrig bahar (flowering) in citrus and pomegranate, farmers should remove dried and infected branches of the plants. Farmers should also apply irrigation in sapota orchard.
