Rains to continue in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir today

Presently, the western end of Axis of Monsoon Trough has shifted southwards and is away from the foothills, while a feeble Western Disturbance is still persisting over northern parts of Jammu and Kashmir region.

Due to the presence of these systems, the hilly states are again gearing up for a rainy spell today. The trio states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand might experience light rains and thundershowers at scattered places. Whereas, Jammu region, as well as southern parts of Himachal Pradesh, are likely to remain warm and uncomfortable due to high humidity.

In the last 24 hours, light rains and thundershowers have been experienced at scattered places over Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. The state of Jammu and Kashmir also experienced rains at isolated places.

These rains occurred in the presence, of the western end of Axis of Monsoon Trough along the foothills.  Also, a feeble Western Disturbance was persisting over Northern parts of Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir.

During the last couple of days, southern parts of Jammu and Kashmir were experiencing warm and humid weather along with cloudy sky conditions. While other parts of Jammu and Kashmir valley, northern parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand were experiencing comfortable weather.

However, very heavy rains had lashed parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand around August 17. These rains had led to extreme damage to life and property in the states. Many people were reported dead. Multiple landslides brought life of tourists and residents to a standstill.

Restoration work is still going on over the hills till now. The upcoming rains are going to be a hindrance in the ongoing rehabilitation.

Instead of the devastatingly heavy rains mid-August, the hilly states are still running rain deficient. As on August 24, the seasonal rainfall deficiency in Jammu and Kashmir stands at 10%, Himachal Pradesh is rain deficient by 5% while Uttarakhand is deficient by 25%.
