Rains to continue in Chandigarh, Patiala, Ludhiana, Karnal, Ambala

Southwest Monsoon has not been very positive for the northwest states of Punjab and Haryana especially in the month of August. The weather of both these states have mainly remained dry and only light spells have been observed by a few parts.

However, the last 24 hours proved to be rainy for most districts of both Punjab and Haryana wherein some light to moderate with isolated heavy spells were observed by the two. Not to forget the 100plus rains that had occurred a day before in Chandigarh thereby resulting in water logging in parts of the city. Though in the last 24 hours, rains have reduced in parts of Punjab and the rain intensity in Haryana was more than that in Punjab.

Within the span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Kurukshetra recorded 48 mm of rains, Hisar 26 mm, Karnal 13.2 mm, Rohtak 7 mm, Chandigarh 7.8 mm, and Patiala recorded some traces of rains.

As per Skymet Weather, the reason for these rains can be associated with the northward shifting of the axis of the Monsoon trough. At present, the axis of Monsoon trough is running from northwest Rajasthan to the Bay of Bengal across Haryana.

Therefore, light to moderate showers with one or two heavy spells can be anticipated over both the states. Particularly districts in East Haryana adjoining Punjab such as Chandigarh, Patiala, Ludhiana, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Yamuna Nagar, Ambala, and Hisar may brace for light to moderate rains for the next 48 hours.

After 48 hours, the axis of Monsoon trough will once again shift towards central parts of the county thereby reducing the rain intensity over both the states. But as moderate winds from the east direction are possible, therefore isolated rain activity will continue.
