Rains to batter Puri, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar soon

Southwest Monsoon had proved to be a boon for the state of Odisha that has been receiving good rains during the entire month of August. Though the intensity of rains varied in parts of the state with the interior regions of the state observing more rains in contrast with the areas lying in the coastal regions.

But heavy rains have not visited Odisha from almost a week now. In the last 24 hours also, Odisha recorded some light to moderate showers. Within the span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Balasore recorded 33 mm of rains, Paradip 27 mm, Chandbali 3 mm, and Bhubaneswar witnessed 2 mm of rains.

In fact, short spells rain and thunder shower with gusty strong wind may occur at some parts over Angul, Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Jharsuguda, Kendrapara, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Bolangir, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Puri and Rayagada districts of Odisha during the next 2 to 4 hours.

As per Skymet Weather, these rains can be associated with the trough that is running from Bihar to the Bay of Bengal across Gangetic West Bengal. Moreover, another cyclonic circulation is expected to develop over Odisha in the next 24 hours.

Therefore, good rains are likely to continue over many parts of the state for the next 24 hours. By August 18, this weather system will move in a west direction towards Chhattisgarh and will gradually intensify. Due to the westerly movement of the weather system, rains will continue over Odisha till August 18 and thereafter, the intensity of rains will reduce. Rain belt will shift towards Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha region in Maharashtra.
