Rains pick up pace over Northeast India

Rain activity has finally picked up its pace over Northeast India that has been witnessing isolated showers for the last few days.

During last 24 hours, scattered light to moderate rain and thundershowers were recorded over Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. While, rest of the region witnessed light activity.

North Lakhimpur recorded 24 mm of rain in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday. This was followed by Tezpur 18 mm, Dibrugarh 14 mm, Pasighat 6 mm, Itanagar 6.2 mm, Tinsukia 5 mm, and Kohima 2.6 mm.

According to Skymet Weather, a cyclonic circulation prevailing over Tripura was instrumental in giving rain activity over most parts of northeast India. Light activity has been going on for the last 2-3 days but rainfall gained momentum during last 24 hours.

Another reason can be attributed to the eastward moment of the Western Disturbance that has been travelling along the foothills of Himalayas.

As per Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the Western Disturbance sometimes bifurcates into two branches after affecting Jammu and Kashmir. One travels over north of Himalayas, with other moves across southwards over foothills of Himalayas and affects northeastern states.

The rain activity is likely to continue for another 24 hours but with reduced intensity as cyclonic circulation over Tripura has become less marked.

However, trough running from Sub-Himalayan West Bengal up to South Odisha will continue to feed some amount of moisture over Northeast India. With this, isolated light rain will continue over isolated parts of the region.
