Rains likely over Chennai during next 48 hours

The weather of Chennai remained dry since past many days. The reason can be attributed to the absence of any weather system.  In wake of this, no significant rainfall was recorded over the city after the cyclonic storm Vardah.

Tamil Nadu including Chennai is battling high rain deficiency this season. Northeast Monsoon has been subdued ever since its onset, which too was a delayed one.

Though the city managed to witness some good spells of rainfall on a few occasions, but this was only during strong weather systems developing over Bay of Bengal such as a cyclone or depression.

At present, a cyclonic circulation is seen over Southwest Bay of Bengal, moving gradually towards South Tamil Nadu. With this system approaching, we can expect light to moderate showers at many places over southern and coastal districts of the state. Chennai is also expected to receive few spells of rain during the next 48 hours. Thereafter, the weather will again go dry over the city.

Despite three cyclones (Kyant, Nada and Vardah) and back to back weather systems in Bay of Bengal, the state has not been able to cover up its rainfall deficiency. Now that only five days are left for the completion of Northeast Monsoon, we believe that season is going to end on a deficit note only.
