The elongated dry spell that has been persisting over most parts of Kerala seems to get eradicated with the possibility of some rains that are predicted to show up soon. Its been almost a month that rains have occurred in the state. The maximums across most of the stations of Kerala have remained in lower 30’s while the minimums kept on settling in the lower 20’s.
In general, January is a lean period when it comes to receiving rains and Kerala does not often sees rainfall activity during the month of January.
According to Skymet Weather, the low-pressure area over Southwest Bay of Bengal is now seen as a trough of low near South Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka coast. A cyclonic circulation is also embedded in the same area.

This weather system has already given moderate to isolated heavy rains in Tamil Nadu though spared the state of Kerala. While the system is expected to persist, it is likely to give rains over the state. However, the rains will mainly confined to lash the southern coastal and central stations of Kerala.

The districts such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Punalur, Kottayam, and Ernakulam are likely to get light to moderate rains for the next 24-48 hours.
Moreover, not much changes in the temperature profile are anticipated and the maximum temperature will continue to remain under 35 degrees Celsius while the minimums will continue to remain in lower 20’s.
