As predicted by Skymet Weather, rains and thundershowers have finally started making an appearance across Kolkata. Sky was cloudy to overcast since morning, making the conditions favourable for rain activity over the capital city.
All thanks to the depression brewing in central and southeast Bay of Bengal, which is located around 560 km southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and around 760 km south of Paradip (Odisha).
The system has been infusing moist winds up to Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata. At present, the city is witness light to moderate rainfall, which is likely to continue for the next few hours.
According to Skymet Weather, rains of similar intensity will continue over the region for the next 24 hours. In wake of this, day maximums are likely to plunge by few notches.
Thereafter, the system is likely to move further northwestwards closer to the coast and intensify further into a deep depression. With this, we can expect heavy to very heavy showers to lash Kolkata after 24 to 48 hours. Moderate to strong winds can also be seen during this time.
Weather models are also indicating that the system is likely to strengthen into a cyclonic storm but for that we have to wait and watch.
