This winter season, the state of Uttar Pradesh has not received any substantial winter rainfall activity. Rather it has remained mainly rain deficit. In consequence to this, we could say that January and February remained as rain deficient months for the state as a whole.

Now, the elongated spell of dry weather is likely to end, as rainy spell is on the cards. These showers will be of light to moderate intensity and will cover the entire state. Districts of West Uttar Pradesh such as Lucknow, Meerut, Moradabad and Agra would observe rains between February 11 and 13. Meanwhile, regions of East Uttar Pradesh such as Gorakhpur, Allahabad and Varanasi would record rainfall around February 12 and 13. These rains will be in the range of 5 to 10 mm.
Furthermore, due the persistence of cloud cover, day temperatures will drop and settle between higher 20s and lower 20s. However, night temperatures will see an upward trend, which are at present settling in single digits, are most likely to mount and settle in double digits.

Unlike this year, the month of January in 2017 was not so disappointing, especially for western parts of the state, wherein fairly widespread rains were witnessed at this time. Looking at the rain statistics, West Uttar Pradesh was rain surplus by 21 percent, while eastern districts of the state were slightly rain deficit by 42 percent.
Coming back to this year, the last one week ranging from February 1 to 9 was dry over the entire region. No rainfall activity was observed and the region reported 100 percent rain deficiency.
If we look at the rain statistics from January 1 to February 7, East Uttar Pradesh was largely rain deficit by 97 percent, whereas western districts of the state saw rain deficiency of 91 percent.
To be simpler, East Uttar Pradesh has recorded mere rainfall of 0.7 mm against its average of 19.8 mm from January 1 to February 7. Similarly, West Uttar Pradesh has witnessed rains to the tune of 1.9 mm against the average of 21.7 mm during the same time frame.
