Kerala is one of the rainiest pockets during the Monsoon season. However, the state has been deficient almost through the season. In fact, even now, the cumulative deficiency persists with Kerala being 33 percent deficient as of today. In fact, Kerala has not even gone to the positive side.
The last good spell that the state saw was around July 19-23. Rains were widespread and even heavy in places.
From July 24 to August 5, the state remained very silent in terms of rains, therefore, the deficiency, which was covered, happened to have mounted again.
However, today and yesterday widespread rains have been seen over the state wherein the northern half has seen more rains than the southern half.
The districts of Wayanad, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Idukki, Malappuram three digit rains. The highest rains of 168 mm in last 24 hours were seen in Vythiri.
In the next 48 hours, good rains are expected to be seen over entire region. Rains will once again be more in the north and less in central parts. Thereafter, rains will slightly reduce but remain fairly widespread. Thereafter, scattered rains are expected on August 11, after which very light rains are expected.
These rains will occur in association of the trough along the West Coast. Also, a surge because of the system which is currently a deep depression and is moving westwards, will cause some rains.
