Rains in Delhi-NCR to return today; relief will be short lived

Since last week of September, Delhi NCR has not witnessed any rains. After the departure of the Southwest Monsoon 2018 from the city, October is considered as one of the lean months when talking about rain.

However rains are now all set to make an appearance on Thursday. As per Skymet Weather, a small patch of thundercloud is moving towards Delhi, therefore condition seems favorable for isolated rains or thunderstorm activities in Delhi-NCR.

All thanks to the fresh Western Disturbance that is passing through Jammu and Kashmir and its induced Cyclonic Circulation over North Rajasthan and adjoining Punjab and Haryana. This weather systems have already given scattered rains in Northwest Uttar Pradesh and parts of Punjab and Haryana.

However, this rain episode will be for a short span and weather will once again clear by tomorrow, i.e. October 12. There are chances of dry northwesterly winds to set in and due to this the sky will become clear. We can expect a drop in minimums by 1-2 degree- Celsius in the coming 48 hours. Despite of a marginal fall in minimums, no relief is foreseen in the day temperatures. Days will continue to remain dry and warm across the national capital.

We know that Punjab and Haryana are situated in northwest direction of Delhi, therefore the smoke particles from stubble burning will be carried towards Delhi wherein the north-westerlies will act as a catalyst.

As the minimums will fall, chances of haze formation will be at its peak. Smoke particles from stubble burning, local pollution of vehicles and industries and dust particles tend to mingle with haze. And, if the velocity of wind decreases then the layer of smog can be formed. This smog pattern is very usual in the month of October and November. However, usually pollution gets washed away due to rains, but the rains will be so light that too in isolated pockets, we won’t get to see much relief from the pollutants.
