Rains continue over hills with no relief in offing; avalanche alert issued

Light to moderate rain with one or two heavy spells of snow is already going on over the states of Jammu and Kashmir, including Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. This weather activity will persist in the region till tomorrow evening, tapering thereafter.

An Avalanche alert has been issued in Himachal Pradesh until Friday, particularly for Lahul and Spiti, Kullu, Chamba and Kinnaur. During this spell of rain and snow, incidents of landslides and road blocks cannot be ruled out in the hill states.

Another active Western Disturbance will approach Western Himalayas by February 17, with weather activity increasing on February 18.

More weather activity ahead

The region will witness two back-to-back Western Disturbances between February 17 and 22. In the presence of this weather system good rain and snow is likely on February 17 and 18. According to meteorologists at Skymet, heavy snowfall is expected on February 21.  So, Winters are here to stay at least until the end of the month.

Is this the harshest Winter?

This Winter season is turning out to be very good in terms of rain and snow for the hill states. At present, all three states are observing excess rain. According to the data available with Skymet, rain in Jammu and Kashmir is excess by 84%, Himachal Pradesh is witnessing an excess of 31%, while Uttarakhand is surplus by 52%.

Record number of Western Disturbances have already been witnessed this year so far. A total of 11 Western Disturbances approached in January and now, the twelfth Western Disturbance is affecting the Western Himalayas.
