Rainiest Week For Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Northeast Region Catch Up Normal Rainfall

Month of March 2022 was highly deficit, recording Pan-India deficiency of huge 71%. This shortfall was one amongst the highest in the recent history.  Northwest India witnessed largest deficiency of 89%, followed by Central India with 87%. East and Northeast region recorded shortfall of 56%, between 01st and 31stMarch. Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh observed seasonal rainfall deficiency of 43%, 41% and 61% respectively.

Rains started picking up during last week  of March and recorded huge surplus in the 1st week of April 2022.  Consequently, the seasonal deficiency got covered for these 3 states. Accordingly, states of Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh are rain surplus with +37%, +125% and 4% respectively, for the period 01stMarch to 06th April 2022. The 3 states have recorded the rainiest week of the pre monsoon season with  3 digit excess of rainfall. Cherrapunji measured record highest 24hr rainfall of 434mm on 04thApril.

With 2 consecutive rainy weeks, seasonal deficiency has been covered for the entire East and Northeast Region.  This heterogenous pocket had recorded rainfall of 28.2mm against the normal of 63.5mm, leading to a deficiency of 56%, between 01stMar to 31st Mar.  Courtesy heavy rains during 1st week of April, the complete region has now measured rainfall of 85.9mm against the average of 85mm, resulting marginal surplus of 1%, between 01stMarch and 06thApril.

Northeast India will continue to  be lashed with moderate to heavy rains for the next one week or even more.  Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh are likely to have heavy to very heavy rainfall between 12-14 April. Moderate rains, as such, will continue during the 2nd and 3rd week of April. Thunderstorm and lightening along with squally winds are likely over most parts. Continuous wet spell may cause landslides , disrupting communication and connectivity in some areas.
