Month of November 2021 has ended with a record pan-India rainfall of 56.5mm against  the monthly normal of 30.4mm. The month becomes rain surplus with 86% excess rains between 01stNov and 30thNov 2021. After the withdrawal of monsoon, seasonal rains generally take a break over the north, east and central parts of the country.  Rainfall is limited to South India in association with the northeast monsoon season. Here too, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Rayalaseema and South Interior Karnataka are among the major contributory sub divisions.  Rest of Karnataka, Telangana and Maharashtra are occasional ‘ add on’.

Before this, even October 2021 finished with on overall surplus of 33%.  Courtesy, delayed withdrawal of southwest monsoon and timely onset of northeast monsoon added to the above normal rainfall. Month of November overshadowed the excess rainfall of October with a deluge in all 5 sub divisions of northeast monsoon. Prior to this, November 1997 had recorded a monthly rainfall of 57.6mm and November 2021 missed the mark narrowly.

November 1979 holds the distinction of being most rainiest since 1901,  the time when reliable records started getting maintained.  That month recorded rainfall of 76.1mm and this was nearly equaled earlier in 1946 with 76mm.  November 2021 has been the rainiest of this century so far. The figure of 56.5mm of Nov 2021 was also matched closely earlier in 2010 with monthly total of 56.4mm.
