Rainfall to reduce over Tamil Nadu and Kerala

The month of September is turning out to be better for Peninsular India as compared to the rest of the Southwest Monsoon months. In June, July, and August, the region remained rain deficient by a good 20 percent. However, as on September 12, the deficiency has dropped down to 16 percent, which falls under the normal rainfall category.

It is due to some good rainfall over areas of Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, South and North Interior Karnataka that the deficiency has improved to quite an extent. Rayalaseema and North Interior Karnataka were not getting enough rain in the months between June and August. However, in September the regions mentioned above have received good amounts of rainfall.

These good spells have also benefitted the crops in North Interior Karnataka and Rayalaseema where rainfall was not sufficient. However, now rain will reduce over Tamil Nadu and Kerala. But, Karnataka, Telangana, and Rayalaseema will continue to receive fairly widespread light to moderate rain for another week or so.

After 3 to 4 days, rainfall will increase over Kerala, but Tamil Nadu will mostly remain dry. Tamil Nadu and Coastal Andhra Pradesh are two meteorological sub-divisions, which receive good rains during the Northeast Monsoon, which arrives in October and lasts until December. As Tamil Nadu falls in the rain shadow area, it receives fewer rains during the Southwest Monsoon as compared to the Northeast Monsoon.
