Updated on September 25, 2015: Scattered rainfall expected in Northeast India
The cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh which was feeding moisture to Northeast India and enhancing rainfall activity in the region has now become less marked and intensity of rain is likely to reduce drastically. Scattered rainfall during evening or night is possible in the region. After 24 hours, the weather is expected to become dry in the region, resulting in increased level of humidity and discomforting situation. The only respite is expected to come from a fresh weather system in Andaman Sea during first week of October.
Updated on September 24, 2015: Rainfall to decrease significantly in Northeast India
Throughout the Monsoon season Northeast India witnessed normal rains, barring June when a marginal surplus of 1% was observed. Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh on occasions received good rains. NMMT (Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura) received relatively less rainfall this season.
In the last 3 to 4 days almost entire Northeast India recorded very good rains. For instance, Cherrapunji and Shillong in Meghalaya recorded a whopping 240 mm and 80 mm of rain respectively. Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram also received 68 mm of rain.
During the same period Silchar and North Lakhimpur in Assam received 37 mm and 36 mm of rain respectively. Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh and Kailashahar in Tripura also received 32 mm and 23 mm of rain, respectively.
A cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh was feeding moisture to Northeast India and enhancing rainfall activity in the region. Currently there is an upper air trough running from Sub Himalayan West Bengal to Northeast Bay of Bengal.
Gradually the system will move in an eastward direction. And after 24 hours significant drop in rainfall activity will be observed over Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh. NMMT will however continue to receive rainfall for another 48 hours.
Thereafter almost entire Northeast India will observe dry weather conditions. Though light scattered rain due some localized activity cannot be ruled out.
