Tamil Nadu has been witnessing good rainfall for around a month now and this is the fourth consecutive week for the state to record excess Northeast Monsoon rains.

Northeast Monsoon remained active over Tamil Nadu during the week between December 03 and December 09. This was on account of a low pressure area and cyclonic circulation in Southwest Bay of Bengal off the Tamil Nadu coast.

The weekly rainfall for the state was excess by 135%, where it has received 75.1 mm of rain against the normal average of 31.9 mm.

Major contribution came from the coastal parts of the state that included places such as Cuddalore, Chennai and Nagapattinam.

Out of 33 districts of Tamil Nadu, 29 districts have been excess between December 03 and December 09. While, one district was normal, two were deficit and one was scanty.

This was also the week when several places across the state witnessed some extremely heavy showers.

Places like Karaikal, Puducherry and Tirunelveli recorded three times of its normal rainfall. While, Cuddalore and Pudukottai received twice of their average rainfall.

Chennai, which saw exceptionally heavy spells in the prior week, also continued with good rain and was excess by 110% this week. The city recorded 124.4 mm of rain against the monthly average of 59.3 mm.
