Rainfall Performance between October 1 and 7

Southwest Monsoon officially came to an end on September 30, around which the withdrawal process also began, which was although late but has since then been a quick one. Due to this, rainfall activity has massively reduced over both northern and central parts of the country.

The first week of the Post Monsoon season has come to an end and all the four regions of the country have recorded deficient rains. Northwest India has been the highest brunt bearer with the region observing a deficiency of a whopping 92 percent. The reason for this no show of rains could be attributed to the absence of weather systems in proximity of the region.

Take a look at the table which shows rainfall deficiency between October 1 and 7 in percentage:

Not far behind have been both Central and East and Northeast India which have also recorded highly deficient rains. In fact, both these areas are deficient by 84 percent, each.

On the other hand, rainfall deficiency was not that much over South India and near normal rains were seen at -23 percent. The reason for good showers over many parts have been attributed to the systems on either side which did cause rainfall over those areas. Both Tamil Nadu and Kerala saw rains akin to the Northeast Monsoon season, however, due to Southwest Monsoon withdrawal still in process, onset of Northeast Monsoon has not been yet declared.

Out of both Tamil Nadu and Kerala, it was Tamil Nadu which saw normal rains all the seven days. All thanks to systems which had developed over both Arabian Sea as well as the Bay of Bengal. In fact, on Oct 4, Tamil Nadu saw excess rains to the tune of 286 percent which had become a whopping 340 percent on October 5. October 6 and 7 also saw 201 and 112 percent of rainfall.

South India could have also gone highly deficient but Tamil Nadu rains were the saving grace. Kerala saw good showers between October 1 and 5 but rains were below normal on both 6th and 7th.

Now, in view of an upcoming cyclone in Bay, rainfall activity will pick up pace over East India while the rainiest pockets of Tamil Nadu and Kerala will see reduction in rains.

The hills of North India will also see some rainfall activity in view of a Western Disturbance while central parts will remain mostly dry.
