Southwest Monsoon 2019 has made its advancement over the Indian sub-continent covering parts of Andaman and Nicobar islands and now reaching up till the Comorin region. However, it still has some time until it arrives over the Indian Mainland.
Though the onset starts in May itself in the Indian subcontinent, the normal date being May 20, the normal onset date for Kerala is June 1. The arrival of Monsoon over the entire country at least takes 45 days. The same is the withdrawal which begins in the first week of September and takes equally long.
Talking about the Monsoon duration, it varies in different regions. For instance, the stay of Monsoon in the northern parts is the shortest which is just about 2 months. Meanwhile, Northeast and Central along with South India see Monsoon rains for 4 months and even slightly more than that in some areas.
However, official countdown starts on June 1 irrespective of its arrival time and ends on September 30 irrespective of Withdrawal. Thus, any rain that occurs from 8:30 today until 8:30 am tomorrow, i.e. June 1, it will be calculated in the Monsoon rains.
The months of July and August are core Monsoon months with July being the rainiest. The least rainy ones are June and September, which are the onset and withdrawal months. Monsoon rains which amount to 887.5 mm for the entire season which is almost about 75 percent of annual rains.
