Rainfall intensity to reduce over Northeast India

This Monsoon, the seven states of Northeast India including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura have received less rainfall as compared to the other parts of the country. As on August 1, Arunachal Pradesh was 7 per cent rain deficient. Also, Assam and Meghalaya were also deficient by 20 per cent.

But for the past 3 to 4 days, many parts of Northeast India particularly Assam and Meghalaya have been observing heavy to very heavy rainfall. Incessant rains in Assam have also resulted in floods in most parts of the state. The region has received five times more rain than its daily normal on August 20 and 21.

This heavy spell may have aggravated the flood situation to quite a large extent but has reduced the rainfall deficiency for Assam and Meghalaya significantly. As on August 22, the rainfall deficiency for the region was reduced from 20 per cent to 8 per cent.

The NMMT (Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura) region has been rain deficient. Also, this spell did not give much rain to the region which means the area remains rain deficient to quite an extent. Now, the intensity of rain is likely to reduce over Northeast India. Also, the flood situation will improve after 48 hours.
