Capital city Delhi is coming up for a prolonged spell of monsoon activity. Seasonal showers will be frequent throughout this week. The intensity and spread of monsoon showers will be on the rise, close to the weekend. Decent showers are expected even today and tomorrow, with isolated heavy bursts, sometime in the evening and night.  Sporadic activity will spill over to the next week, as well. The national capital may stock over 100mm of rainfall during this event and reach closer to the monthly target of 233.1mm.

The monsoon trough will be the main trigger for this active phase of the monsoon.  Till yesterday, the remnant of the depression and associated cyclonic circulation had dragged the monsoon trough, south of its normal position, with respect to Delhi.  The weakened low-pressure area and its circulation are now on the verge of crossing border areas of West Rajasthan. Monsoon trough will get detached from this system and resume its normal position. In the lower levels, the trough runs from Ganganagar in Rajasthan to Howrah in West Bengal, tracking along Indo-Gangetic plains of Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal.

The east-west oriented monsoon trough, slightly inclined on the western end, is keeping close proximity to Delhi. As such, the elongated feature is embedded with small and closed vortices, which normally happens during such meteorological scenarios. These vortices become the activity center leading to sharp and intense showers. The closeness of the monsoon trough to the national capital will trigger frequent monsoon showers over the next 5-6 days. The weather activity will be more perceptible and stronger during the evening and night hours. With persistent clouds, moderate breeze and frequent rainy streaks, weather conditions will be quite soothing for Delhi and its suburbs for this week. Day temperatures will generally remain below normal and stay put in the low 30s on most days.
