The overstaying winter season is expected to stay a little longer in Jammu and Kashmir as another spell of rain and snow is likely on 24th March over the hilly state. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, snow is likely over higher reaches of J&K and rain will include lower reaches and some of the foothills.
The inclement weather may pose more challenges to the normal life and restoration of Srinagar-Jammu highway that remained closed for several days in past and opened for one-way traffic a couple of days back.
“The Western Disturbance is likely to give rain and snow over parts of Jammu and Kashmir. The activity may be light in nature but will soon be followed by another extended spell of rain and snow,” says GP Sharma, chief meteorologist, Skymet Weather Services.
Usually the prolonged spells of rain and snow remain confined to Jammu and Kashmir during December and January. However, this year the state witnessed some of its heaviest spell and record breaking snowfall in Srinagar and other parts during February and March.
Due to cloudy skies and subsequent rainfall, maximum or day temperatures across the state are likely to witness a drop by 2-3°C and get back to normal. The temperatures are currently 2-3°C above normal.
