August 11, 2015 1:49 PM |

Karnataka rainKarnataka comprises of three meteorological sub-divisions of Coastal Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka and North Interior Karnataka. Rainfall amounts are the highest in Coastal Karnataka followed by South Interior Karnataka and North Interior Karnataka.

Most parts of North Interior Karnataka lie on the leeward side of the Western Ghats due to which the region observes less rain. While South Interior Karnataka is a small pocket and observes marginally better rain as some of the places in the region are located on plateaus.

As far as seasonal rain is concerned - from June 1 to August 10 - the entire state is deficient. North Interior Karnataka is the most deficient sub-division of the state with a rainfall shortage of 45%. In fact, it is the second most deficient sub-division of the country after Marathwada in Maharashtra.

However, in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, North Interior Karnataka has been observing light to moderate rain. For instance, Gulbarga received 55 mm of rain during this period, while light rain of 2 mm was observed in Gadag.

According to the weather models of Skymet, rainfall activity in the region (North Interior Karnataka) is expected to pick up from August 13 due to the low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal moving inland. Some places may receive good amounts of rain during this period.

Meanwhile, Coastal Karnataka also received good amounts of rain on Monday. Honavar in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday received 78 mm of rain. While Karwar and Mangalore observed 55 mm and 26 mm of rain, respectively.
