Rain to hamper rescue and relief operations in quake-hit Nepal

Earthquake in NepalAfter massive earthquakes shook Nepal once again on Tuesday afternoon, bad weather in the region is now going to add to the misery of the people.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, a Western Disturbance is likely to affect East Nepal from Wednesday onwards giving heavy rain over the region for next 48 hours. Thereafter, the intensity of rain will reduce as the system moves away.

Rough weather conditions are expected to further worsen the situation as it will halt rescue and relief operations. Moreover, chances of landslides will also increase.

According to Skymet, Nepal being a mountainous terrain is a weather sensitive pocket, as such terrains respond very quickly to any weather system and thus the weather changes very rapidly.

So far, 36 people have been reported dead and over 1000 people have been injured. Three major landslides have been reported in the Sindhupalchowk region, as told to Reuters. Rehabilitation process has also suffered major setback.

Around 12: 40 pm (IST) today, two back-to-back earthquakes jolted Nepal with the first quake measuring 7.3 on Richter scale with epicenter near Kathmandu. While the second one was of magnitude 7.1, with the epicenter near Kodari in Nepal.

These earthquakes have struck after a massive quake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale on April 25, killed over 8000 people and injured around 17,000.
