Record breaking rain in Karaikal, Tamil Nadu; light rain to follow

March 5, 2017 12:58 PM |

Light showers are likely over Chennai tomorrow

During last few days, on and off rain activity is going over Tamil Nadu but during last 24 hours intensity has increased. Yesterday, many places over the state has received light to moderate showers with one or two heavy spells over the region. These rains are happening due to a trough persisting over South Tamil Nadu coast.

Areas like Nagapattinam and Karaikal have received record breaking rainfall with heavy spells of 85 mm and 173 mm of rainfall respectively in the span of 24 hours. 173 mm of heavy rainfall in Karaikal is the highest ever rainfall for the station in the month of March. Earlier, the station recorded 112.5 mm on March 13, 2008.

Even rainfall in Nagapattinam was the highest since 2008.

Chennai may receive some light rainy spells which will be of short duration. The moderate spells of rain with isolated heavy spells are expected to be confined to the interior parts of the state.

We expect this rainfall to continue over the state during entire next week. So we can say that this is the rainiest week of this year for Tamil Nadu.

Such heavy spells for the region in March is unusual. The months of March and April are usually drier months with occasional showers registered over the region. It is the months of June and July when such heavy spells are registered.
