The Pre-Monsoon season over India has varied durations. While North India enjoys wintry weather during the first half of March, summer sets in quite early for Central and East India including the states of Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha.

In fact, maximum temperatures this time even went close to 40 degrees Celsius over these states during the month of March itself. Thus, the month of March has not only remained rain deficient, but it has also remained above normal.

Meanwhile, the month of April began on a rainy note and on and off rains have been occurring over the states of Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal for the past many days.

During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Burdwan and Phulbani recorded 29 mm of rains each, Shanti Niketan 27 mm, Jamshedpur 16 mm, Purulia 10 mm, Balasore 9 mm, Midnapore 9 mm, Diamond Harbour 9 mm, and Ranchi 2 mm.

A cyclonic circulation persists over eastern parts of the country along with which a trough is extending across the region.

Thus, scattered rainfall and thunderstorm activity is expected over the states of Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha during the next two to three days. Isolated pockets may also witness lightning strikes and gale force winds.

As far as the temperatures are concerned, they have remained in the mid-30s, keeping the heatwave far away. Interior Odisha has been recording maximums in the high 30s, but here the average temperatures are also in that range itself.

During the month of March, some violent thunderstorms were witnessed over the region, but April saw rainier weather with most stations surpassing their monthly mean in the first ten days of April itself.

The areas of Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha witness violent thunderstorms along with gale force winds as well as hailstorm activity. The Kal Baisakhi originates over the Chhotanagpur region of Jharkhand and travels from northwest to southeast affecting the states of Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha.
