As predicted by Skymet Weather, rain and thundershowers have started lashing Kolkata around 3 pm today. Rain bearing intense clouds had been engulfing the state capital since afternoon hours.
Few other pre-Monsoon activities such as thunderstorm along with intense lightning strikes and squally winds can also be witnessed over the city. This also the favourable period for hailstorm activity.
Weathermen predict that this spell is likely to continue for next 2-3 hours, ushering much needed relief from hot and humid weather conditions. In wake of this, the day temperatures are also likely to drop, making the evenings pleasant.
According to Skymet Weather, a trough has been extending from Central Pakistan up till Tripura with three cyclonic circulations embedded over it. This has made the weather conditions conducive for pre-Monsoon showers over several parts of West Bengal including Kolkata.
Now, the trough will continue to persist for another 24 hours, so does the rain activity. Weathermen predict that Kolkata will continue with rain and thundershowers on Wednesday as well. Thursday could also see some showers but with reduced intensity.
But as reiterated earlier, these pre-monsoon activities will occur during the late afternoon or evening hours.
May started on a rainy note, with Kolkata recording showers on the first two days of the month. So far, the city has recorded 4.4 mm of rainfall but there is still a long way to go as city’s monthly average rainfall stands at 136.6 mm.
