Rain, Snow likely to lash Jammu and Kashmir by the weekend

Till date, a number of Western Disturbances have approached the state of Jammu and Kashmir and Western Himalayas.

However, the typical moderate to heavy snow has still not occurred over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Though light snow at a few places was reported particularly over higher reaches of the hill states of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. In fact, Srinagar as on December 8 measured the temperature of -3.7°C.

But now, a strong Western Disturbance is likely to approach the hills of Western Himalayas by December 10. This Western Disturbance has simultaneously induced a cyclonic circulation over northern plains of Punjab and Haryana. This is expected to lead to some moderate to heavy snow at many places over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and at a few places over Uttarakhand during the weekend.

Scattered light to moderate rains is also foreseen for plains of Punjab and Haryana.  Moreover, light rains at one or two places cannot be ruled out over northwest parts of Rajasthan. Post this period of heavy snow, temperatures over entire northern plains are likely to drop.

Severe winter-like conditions will make its appearance. As per Skymet Weather, whenever there is heavy snow, the northerly winds which blow from hilly regions, tend to drop the temperatures over the plains, thereby scaling up the humidity levels thus leading to winter like conditions.

With the mixed effects of these two, dense to very dense fog is expected to engulf the entire northern plains on December 12.
