As a fresh Western Disturbance is about to approach the northern hills by February 5, it is likely to induce some heavy snow and rainfall over the trio hilly states starting tomorrow onward. It will not be wrong to expect this one to be the heaviest snowfall of the season.
The first spell will be witnessed over Jammu and Kashmir tomorrow, which will then grip Himachal Pradesh by the evening. The intensity of these weather activities will increase February 6 onward. Between February 6 and February 8, we expect moderate to heavy rain and snow over many places in these states. Intensity will be heaviest on February 7 when even hailstorm activities are possible over many parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, particularly in the southern districts.
Snowstorms and avalanches are also on a probability. Road blockages are ahead in the pipeline, credits to snowfall causing major problems in commuting. Day temperatures will fall by 8 to 10 degrees, making the weather unbearably cold. It is advised to people to store all the daily need items handy for at least next four to five days as roads and transportation will be heavily affected during this period.
The weather intensity is expected to reduce only by February 8. Weather will not start clearing up until February 9 when the sun is expected to come up. Day temperatures will start increasing inducing a little relief.
Since last many days, weather was running dry over the hilly states. The last good rainy spell was observed between January 30 to Feb 1, when rain and snowfall occurred over many parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Talking about how the rains been doing over hills- the month of January turned out to be very good in terms of rain and snowfall over Western Himalayas. Around six active Western Disturbances approached the hilly states and have given moderate to heavy snowfall- the reason why Jammu-Kashmir is running rain surplus by 53%, Uttarakhand surplus by 41% with Himachal Pradesh in normal rain category with a deficiency of just 8%.
