For the first time in this Monsoon season rainfall during the week has been about 20% excess. The week ended 24th July – has not only improved the regional deficit but the cumulative deficit has also come down from 36% to 24% at the moment.
However, rain has reduced significantly across the country. The west coast will continue to receive fair amount of rain but coastal parts of north Maharashtra will witness subdued activity, in the absence of a fresh Monsoon surge.
The pace at which the cumulative national rain deficit has been decreasing will also get arrested now and could also rise marginally in the coming days. National rain deficiency came down by 12% in last 11 days but remained stagnant at 24% in the last 2 days.
Widespread rain is not likely in the offing and only spot rain will continue, which will not be enough to bring down the national rain deficit at the same pace. Tomorrow, rain will continue along the west coast. The western end of the Monsoon trough is northwards, bringing rain over Indo Gangetic plains, Rajasthan and parts of East India. Delhi could also receive some rain from Sunday onwards.
Though last week has been good, concern over poor rains in the country still exists. According to Skymet meteorology Division in India, the average rainfall for the country from 1st June to 16th July is 308 mm, whereas there had been 196.9 mm of rain only.
