Rain outlook for Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh

Chennai has been severely affected by heavy rains since the last two weeks due to two back to back depressions. These two systems resulted in 844 mm of rainfall in Chennai in just about 14 days. Heavy rain began from November 7 and still continues over the capital city of Tamil Nadu. While November recorded 167 mm rain, 265 mm rainfall was recorded on November 15.

The residents of Chennai witnessed heavy flooding which resulted in traffic disruptions. Also, schools remain closed as flood threat looms large over the state capital. The second depression then moved towards Coastal Andhra Pradesh giving very heavy rain over Nellore, Machilipatnam and adjoining areas.

After a break of two days, rainfall intensity has again picked up in Chennai. During the last 24 hours, the city has recorded 37 mm of rain. No relief is likely for another 2 to 3 days. Also, heavy rain is likely on November 22 and November 23, which may worsen the flood situation and hinder the rescue operations.

Thereafter, the intensity of rain is likely to reduce giving the much needed relief to the residents of Chennai.
