Depression in the Bay of Bengal has moved about 100 km westward and now lies at a distance of 550 km East-Southeast from Chennai, which is the closest of the cities likely to be affected during the next few days. The depression is 570 km East-Northeast of Nagapattinam and 630 km East-Southeast of Nellore. The weather system is centered at Latitude 11.5 degrees North and Longitude 85 degrees East.
It is expected to move in westward direction initially but will turn a bit to progress in a West-Northwestwards direction in the next 48 hours. The landfall has been predicted to be on 16th of November. South Peninsula will witness another wet spell in quick succession, with a break of about 48 hours.
Coastal Tamil Nadu and south coastal Andhra Pradesh should gear up for increase in rainfall today evening onwards. Rain will be heavy to very heavy at a few places in north coastal Tamil Nadu and south coastal Andhra Pradesh. Some places could also experience more than 100 mm of rain in these areas. There will be rainfall at most places in rest of Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema in Andhra Pradesh during the next three days.
The region will also witness wind speeds of around 50 to 60 kmph along with a period of incessant rain which could impact daily lives by flooding the low-lying areas and disrupting power supply. However the weather will not be as inclement as it was during the stay of Cyclone Phailin. Odisha and north coastal Andhra Pradesh are expected to be spared by the present depression.
