Northeastern region which has been short in terms of winter rain since the start of the year 2014 have started to observe some rainfall in the last two days. Several weather stations in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya have received rain in last 24 hours.
From 8:30 am on Sunday till 8:30 am on Monday Passighat in Arunachal Pradesh recorded 14.5 mm of rain. Dibrugarh in Assam recorded 6.3 mm while North Lakhimpur and Silchar both received 1.6 mm of rain. There was also rain in Lengpui in Mizoram and Kailshahar rain in Tripura. Manipur's capital Imphal too recorded traces of rain.
Remnants of last week's Western Disturbance over Jammu & Kashmir has reached Northeast as a cyclonic circulation and is getting moisture from the Bay of Bengal and will continue giving rain in the region for the next two days.
The northeast region has been lacking in terms of winter rain since the start of this year. From 1st of January till 5th of February, winter rain in Assam and Meghalaya have been scanty by -93 per cent while, Arunachal Pradesh is scanty by -71 per cent. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are deficient by -93 per cent during the period.
The reason behind such shortfall in winter rain in Northeast India is the movement of the remnants of Western Disturbance in the higher latitudes till now. However, we are now in the month of February, a time when Western Disturbances are frequent and come down to much lower latitudes than in January, the region may receive some more rain during the month.
