Rain likely in Tamil Nadu until weekend, Chennai to see light to moderate showers

After observing subdued Monsoon conditions for a prolonged period, rain again commenced in Tamil Nadu from November 14. During the last 24 hours, scattered light to moderate rains have been recorded in many parts of the state. However, the intensity remained mainly light in the capital city of Chennai.

Parangipettai has recorded 21 mm of rainfall, followed by Karaikal and Palayamkottai 10 mm each, Pamban 4 mm and Chennai 3 mm in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday.

According to Skymet Weather, the easterly wave is strengthening and would bring more on and off rains for Tamil Nadu until the weekend. Scattered showers would be seen in many parts of the state during this span.

The capital city of Chennai may record light to moderate showers coupled with cloudy sky conditions and comfortable weather until November 22 and 23.

Tamil Nadu had witnessed good amounts of rainfall during the month of October and was standing rain surplus by 27%, as per rainfall data from October 1 to 31. However, the tables were completely turned when November started on a subdued note and the first thirteen days were almost dry. In the absence of any significant rains, the surplus was completely consumed and the state was standing rain deficient by 6% as of November 17. (rainfall data from October 1 to November 17).

Weather alert for Tamil Nadu

Light to moderate spells of rain and thundershowers with gusty winds will occur in some parts of Karaikal, Puducherry, Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Dharmapuri, Kancheepuram, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Salem, Sivaganga, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Tiruchirappalli, Tiruvannamalai, and Viluppuram during next two to four hours.
