The North Indian Plains have been witnessing dry weather conditions for quite some time now. Rainfall activity has been on the backseat for the entire region including the states of Punjab, Haryana and Western parts of Uttar Pradesh.
As far as temperatures are concerned, nights have become quite cold for Punjab and Haryana with minimums even dropping below the 5-degree mark over a few areas. Meanwhile, maximums have remained on the higher side.

Now, rains have begun to make an appearance over the Northern plains in view of multiple weather systems prevailing over the region. In fact, during the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Amritsar recorded 2 mm of rains with Ludhiana seeing 0.2 mm of rainfall.
A Western Disturbance is over Western Himalayan region. An induced cyclonic circulation from this system can be seen over Central Pakistan and adjoining Rajasthan region.

With these weather systems, rains are likely to occur over Punjab, Haryana and West Uttar Pradesh today onward and will continue till December 14. Hailstorm may also occur over some parts of Punjab.
Rains may take a break on December 12 with rainfall activity once again occurring between December 13 and 14. Due to these rains, temperatures are expected to witness a drop. Due to this drop in temperature, chilly conditions will prevail over the entire region. Thus, you can expect these winter rains to cause that missing chill in the air.
