Vidarbha and Marathwada have received on and off rains in the month of February and March. These two regions of Maharashtra sometimes receive rains due to formation of a confluence zone when humid winds from Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea meet leading to formation of cloud and subsequent rainfall.

However, as the season progresses, and temperatures start rising during March and April, Pre-Monsoon activities in the form of thundershowers and squally winds increases. This time these activities will be due to a well-marked low over Comorin area which will subsequently intensify into a depression by March 13 and a trough is already extending from Lakshadweep to Madhya Pradesh across Vidarbha and Marathwada.
Thus, rains are likely to commence over Marathwada around March 14. By March 15, rain activities are expected over many districts of Marathwada and Vidarbha. This is one of the favorable periods for hailstorm as well. Therefore, chances of hailstorm cannot be ruled out. Rains will reduce by March 17.
Temperatures which are running in the higher 30s will come down to lower 30s leading to some relief from the prevailing weather conditions. Cities including Parbhani, Hingoli, Osamabad, Nagpur, Akola, Yeotmal will receive rains during this period.
Let us look at the impact of this weather on agriculture of Vidarbha and Marathwada:
Due to expected spell of rainfall and hailstorm, farmers are advised to complete Wheat, Rabi Jowar and Safflower harvesting or harvest and keep them at a safe place. Farmers are also suggested to complete harvesting of matured Orange, Mosambi and Grapes. Due to rainfall, cloudy weather and hailstorm; there are chances of losses due to flower and fruit drops to the Orchards in Marathawada & Vidarbha. Therefore, farmers are suggested to manage the operations as well as be cautious.
