Rain likely in Nagpur, Gondia; harvest crops after February 15

After remaining parched for the last many days, good rain and thundershowers occurred in most parts of Vidarbha in the last 48 hours. Hailstorm activities were also reported in parts of the region that resulted in damage to several crops in the region.

Parts of Marathwada also received isolated rain and thundershowers but hailstorms spared the region. These rains continued in the last 24 hours as well. However, the intensity and spread of rain were much more over Vidarbha in contrast with the Marathwada region.

In a span of 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Monday, Chandrapur recorded 34 mm of rains, followed by Udgir with 30 mm, Brahmapuri 24 mm, Yeotmal 14 mm, Wardha 6.6 mm, Amravati 4.2 mm, Gondia 1.8 mm and Nagpur witnessed 1.2 mm of light spells.

The maximums that were running above the normal levels by 4-5 degrees, dropped below normal by 2-3 degrees. However, minimums are still settling above normal. As per Skymet Weather, scattered rain and thundershowers are expected to continue over Vidarbha region until tonight.

For Marathwada region, the rain intensity has though reduced, isolated light rains are likely to continue for the next 24 hours.

A feeble cyclonic circulation is persisting over Marathwada and adjoining areas. A lower level trough is also seen extending from Marathwada to East Madhya Pradesh across Vidarbha. Moreover, humid winds from the Bay of Bengal are also incurring moisture over Vidarbha.

These weather systems would be responsible for giving rain and thundershowers over both Vidarbha and Marathwada for the next 24 hours. Thereafter, the weather is expected to become dry. Moreover, the day temperatures would also remain below the normal levels, thereby reducing by 2-3 degrees in the next 24 hours.

Cool and comfortable weather would continue to prevail over both Vidarbha and Marathwada. 24 hours hence, the weather is likely to become dry over both Vidarbha and Marathwada.

At this stage, let us take a brief look at the consequence of weather on agriculture:

Farmers in Marathwada and Vidarbha are requested to take care of the standing Rabi crops such as Bengal gram, Wheat & Safflower and Fruit crops like Orange, Pomegranate, Grapes, Mango, Papaya, Banana against expected rain and thundershowers.

Vegetable crops such as Tomato, Onion are also to be taken care of in the event of an expected event of rainfall and thundershowers.

Farmers are recommended to resume the harvesting of Rabi crops after February 15 as per crop moisture conditions. Farmers are also advised to store harvested crops under shade or cover it with a plastic sheet.
