West Bengal and Jharkhand in East India observed rain and thundershowers on Monday. The intensity of rainfall was heavier in parts of West Bengal. During this period, the region is frequented by Nor’Westers, which are strong winds accompanied by rain and thundershowers. A couple of spells have already affected East India in the last few days.
For instance, Bankura in last 24 hours, from 8.30 am on Monday received 44.4 mm rain. Midnapore recorded 28.88 mm rain, Malda 32.5 mm, and Jamshedpur 28 mm. On April 21, around 6 to 7 districts of Bihar were affected by a severe storm, which had claimed the lives of 32 people and left over 80 injured.
Presently, a cyclonic circulation is marked over Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. This system is pushing moist winds to the region. Another weather system along the Indo-Gangetic plain has been affecting Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR, west & central Uttar Pradesh for the past 24 hours.
This system is then expected to move eastward and affect parts of east Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The system after moving eastward will strengthen the circulation and make things more conducive for the Nor’Westers in this particular pocket. Thus, the aforementioned area is prone to strong winds and rain/thundershowers for next 48 hours.
Nor’westers, also known as Kalbaisakhi, is a local thunderstorm, which occurs in parts of East India including Bihar, West Bengal and Jharkhand during the months of April and May. The phenomenon is accompanied by violent thunderstorms and severe lightning with strong winds of 100 km/hr.
