The month of February has been a rainy and snowy affair for the hilly regions of Jammu and Kashmir. However, these showers were mainly confined to the upper reaches of the state, while the lower regions such as Katra and the holy shrine Vaishno Devi remained dry.

Vaishno Devi witnessed its last rainy spell on February 11-12. Though many Western Disturbances approached the state, but they were feeble in nature, hence Katra and Vaishno Devo failed to record any rain after February 12.
In the absence of any significant weather activity, both maximum and minimum temperatures also increased that have been hovering 3°C to 4°C above normal.
As per weathermen at Skymet Weather, a fresh and active Western Disturbance has approached Jammu and Kashmir. In wake of this weather system, Katra and Jammu and Kashmir are likely to witness rain and thundershower activity in the next 24 hours.

Normally, when rain continues for a longer duration over the hilltop and the temperatures are low, rain gradually converts into snowflakes after five to six hours. Therefore, snowfall also stands chance over the region.
The activity is likely to commence by late night of February 23 but that will remain isolated in nature. The intensity and spread of rain will be more on February 24. Thereafter, as the system will move away by February 25, the intensity of rain will start reducing significantly. During that time, both maximum and minimum temperatures are anticipated to take a dip.
Rainy weekend is ahead for Vaishno Devi. Therefore, those who are planning a trip to the shrine should carry raincoats and woolens as rains might be a hindrance during the journey to the temple.
