Rain in Uttarakhand to increase; possibility of landslides, flashfloods

Threat of landslides in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand due to upcoming rains

As Monsoon has marked its onset over the entire country, good rains are being witnessed in varied intensity over all parts of the country. In fact, the Western Himalayas have been receiving good Monsoon showers since last few days which have even caused disruptions in the form of landslides and flashfloods.

The state of Uttarakhand also received light to moderate rains at many places with heavy spells at few places during the last 24 hours. The capital of Uttarakhand, Dehradun recorded heavy rainfall activity to the tune of 55 mm.

In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Saturday, Pantnagar recorded 31.6 mm of rain, followed by Mussoire 13.4 mm, Mukteshwar 5.2 mm, Haridwar 6 mm.

Currently, a Western Disturbance as an upper sir system is seen persisting over northern parts of Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining region. Its induced upper air cyclonic circulation lies over Northwest Rajasthan and adjoining region.

Simultaneously the axis of Monsoon trough which is running across North Rajasthan and Central Uttar Pradesh is likely to shift northwards, close to foothill of Himalayas during the next 24 hours.

Hence, under all these conditions, rainfall activity is likely to increase over the state of Uttarakhand. Moderate to heavy rains are expected to occur during the next 48 hours at many places over of Uttarakhand, which may even cause landslides and flood like situations at some places.
