Updated on February 24, 2016: After witnessing hot and humid conditions for the past few days, a few areas in Odisha including Balasore have finally received some rain. Also, rain made an appearance over Kolkata after a prolonged dry spell. Now, the rain belt is likely to shift towards East and Central India.

An east-west trough is extending from Gangetic West Bengal to Madhya Pradesh. A few cyclonic circulations are embedded in the trough. While one of them is over Gangetic West Bengal and Bangladesh, the other is over East Madhya Pradesh adjoining the Chhattisgarh region.

Due to these systems, the rainfall activity will now spread over central and eastren parts of the country. Rain is likely over places including Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and East Madhya Pradesh.

Story First Published on February 21, 2016: For the past couple of days, winter chill has entirely abated from East India. In fact, warm weather conditions have taken over.

Both maximum and minimum temperatures have been settling well above the average levels.

While day temperatures have soared significantly with maximums settling at least 5 to 9 degrees above the normal range, the night temperatures have also increased.

Minimums have been settling around 3 to 5 degrees above the normal levels.

No change is expected during the next 24 hours. However, the weather conditions are likely to change after 24 to 48 hours as the northwesterly winds have started blowing over the region. The cyclonic circulation formed over Bangladesh and adjoining areas is likely to extend up to the Odisha coast and Gangetic West Bengal.

Due to this system, rainfall is expected over parts of East India including Odisha, West Bengal, and Jharkhand. Clouding will begin Tuesday onward. While Southeast West Bengal will start receiving rain on Tuesday, the rainfall spread will further reach other parts of East India by Wednesday. After that, major relief in terms of weather conditions is expected.

Places including Ranchi, Kolkata, and Bhubaneswar will also receive rain around February 24 and February 25.

The maximum and minimum temperatures, which have been settling way above the normal range are likely to witness a sharp dip during the next 24 to 48 hours. However, wintry conditions will not make a comeback over East India.
