Rain in the offing for Bengaluru after prolonged dry spellUpdated on March 15, 2016: As reiterated by Skymet Weather, light rain knocked Bengaluru's doors on March 13 after a prolonged dry spell. The capital city of Karnataka recorded 0.4 mm of rainfall in a span of 24 hours.

Though the rain was light in intensity, the residents rejoiced after drops of rain gave them a sneak peak of an upcoming rainy spell.

An upper air cyclonic circulation is presently over Marathwada and its adjoining area. A north-south trough from this system is extending to Lakshadweep across Kerala and Interior Karnataka.

There's more good news in store for Bengaluru. The trough will result in light to moderate rain over Bengaluru on March 16 and 17. These rains will not be intense but will give that much-needed relief from the ongoing hot weather conditions.

One or two spell of light showers may also occur over Bengaluru today.

During the pre-Monsoon season, due to heat build up, the north-south trough becomes a semi-permanent feature over Peninsular India.

Story First Published on March 12, 2016:  Bengaluru has remained dry for the past one month. The capital city of Karnataka, which usually remains pleasant, has been observing hot and humid.

Sunny conditions and a prolonged dry spell has been increasing the maximum temperature. However, rain is in the offing for Bengaluru.

March and April are the two hottest months in Bengaluru. Other than that, the city usually observes pleasant weather conditions throughout the year.

The average maximum for Bengaluru in March stands at 33 degrees while the minimum hovers around 19 and 20 degree Celsius. On March 11, the maximum in Bengaluru reached up to 35.2 degree Celsius.

Bengaluru receives about 7 mm rain during the month of March. However, this month the city has remained practically dry. Ten days have passed by and not even a drop of rain has been received in March. In fact, almost the entire February also remained dry.

Presently, an offshore trough is extending along the coast from Kerala to Konkan, Goa, and Mumbai. In the next few days, the oscillation of the trough will take place which will shift inside across the Southern Peninsula.

This shift in the trough will result in a rainy spell in Bengaluru between March 13 and 17. Light rain and thundershowers will be observed on March 13 and 14. However, the intensity of rain will increase on March 15 and 16. A few moderate spells can be observed during this period.

This rainy period will bring in some relief from the ongoing weather conditions. A marginal drop is expected in both maximums and minimums.
