The Month of May has begun on a rainy note for the state of Tamil Nadu. Many districts of the state, especially the interior stations have been recording pre-Monsoon rains.

In fact, there was a significant increase in the rain spread and intensity over the state during the last 48 hours. In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Kodaikanal recorded heavy rain to the tune of 106 mm, followed by Tiruchirappalli at 76 mm and Madurai 45.4 mm of rains. In the same time, Coimbatore witnessed 23.1 mm of rains, Coonor 17.8 mm and Salem 4.6 mm of rains.

As per Skymet Weather, these rains can be attributed due to the persistence of a north-south trough. This trough at times originates from Central India and sometimes from North Karnataka reaching up to South Tamil Nadu.

Now, we expect light to moderate pre-Monsoon showers to continue over the interior parts of Tamil Nadu. In fact, one or two heavy spells cannot be ruled out. The remaining districts of the including are also expected to record light rain or thunderstorm activity. Chennai rains might also make an appearance as the moisture content is increasing over the region during the next 24 to 48 hours, However, they will be patchy and very light in nature.

Though, the month of May is not one of the rainiest months for Tamil Nadu. However, due to the activation of the north-south trough, some good showers occurred over the state.

Meanwhile, the coastal districts such as Chennai and Puducherry receive very fewer rains as the north-south trough, influences the interior parts only. The coastal stations record rain only when any significant weather system such as a cyclonic circulation or any low-pressure area develops over South West Bay off South Andhra Pradesh or North Tamil Nadu coast. This year we have not witnessed any such system until now, therefore Chennai rains have remained on a back seat.
