We can see another cyclonic circulation over Lakshadweep and adjoining areas. This weather system has been also bring rain and thundershowers over the Thrissur district of Kerala from early morning hours of Thursday.
Reportedly, heavy winds led to the collapse of a tree, killing a student and critically injuring at least five more. This incident took place at the Guruvayur Sreekrishna college, where the students had gathered for the D Zone Arts Fest organized by the Calicut University.
The 18 year old girl who lost her life has been identified as Anusha, a first year BA Economics student from Chittiappilly.
Updated on February 18, 2016 11:00 AM (IST): Rain in Tamil Nadu, Kerala to continue till coming weekend
Southern parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala have been receiving scattered light to moderate rainfall for the last 2 to 3 days. This could be attributed to the slow moving low pressure area which has now shifted to South Bay of Bengal. Rather it seems to be more of a trough now moving along the East Coast. Nevertheless, it is good enough to bring a prolonged spell of rain in Tamil Nadu.

Due to this weather system strong easterly winds are blowing over Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Scattered rainfall activity will continue over Tamil Nadu and Kerala till February 20. Thereafter, the intensity and spread of rainfall will decrease significantly but isolated rainfall activity could continue over the region.
During the last 24 hours, Kanyakumari received 13 mm of rain, Karaikal 0.2 mm and Thiruvananthapuram traces of rain.
The low pressure which generated into a trough could further weaken and become insignificant, gradually moving further south. However, rain will continue over the Equatorial Indian Ocean.
Updated on February 17, 2016 10:30 AM (IST): Rain in Tamil Nadu to bring relief from hot and humid weather
This February has been mainly dry in Tamil Nadu. As such the state receives very less rainfall this month. However, by the end of the month the pre-Monsoon feeling dawns upon the state bringing rain and thundershowers over extreme southern parts.
As of now, we can expect some rainfall during the next few days. A spell of rain from February 18 to 20, in association with the prevailing low-pressure area, will first bring rains in the extreme southern parts of Tamil Nadu. Gradually, the rain belt will cover the interiors of the state.

The low-pressure area has been lingering on for quite some time and has brought good amounts of rainfall in Sri Lanka during the last 48 hours.

At present, the slow moving weather system is lying over Southwest Bay of Bengal. It will come closer to the Tamil Nadu coast by tomorrow.
Tamil Nadu will remain mostly dry for rest of the month.
Temperatures in Tamil Nadu
Dry weather conditions have been prevailing over the region for the last few days, in absence of any rainfall. Temperatures have increased to mid-thirties in the interiors and low-thirties in the coastal stations.
On Tuesday, Nagapattinam recorded 31°C as maximum while Chennai was at 32°C. In the interiors of the state, Madurai and Salem recorded 35°C as maximum temperature.
High humidity levels in the coastal stations have made matters worse. We can expect some relief from the February 18.
Tomorrow, we could expect cloudy skies over most parts of Tamil Nadu which will bring down the maximum temperatures.
