Northeast Monsoon has been vigorous over Tamil Nadu this year, especially over the coastal parts. Due to Tamil Nadu rains, several coastal cities have surpassed monthly average rainfall during the first 10 days of December itself.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, November 15 to December 15 is considered to be the peak season of Northeast Monsoon. True to its characteristics, active Monsoon systems had formed in the southwest Bay of Bengal and affected the Tamil Nadu coast.
In December, a low-pressure area had developed in Southwest Bay of Bengal, initially giving extremely heavy rainfall over North Tamil Nadu including Chennai that triggered floods. Later on, the system shifted southwards and battered central and south coastal parts.
Chennai recorded whopping 345 mm of rain in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on December 1. Puducherry had also recorded 218.1 mm of rain on the same day.
Similarly, Karaikal recorded 162.1 mm of rain in 24 hours till 8:30 am on December 8.
Let us have a look at the actual and normal rainfall figures recorded across major coastal cities.
According to Skymet, rains have already reduced significantly and no major rain activity is expected during five or six days also.
Now as we are about to enter in the last leg of Northeast Monsoon, rains will start reducing gradually. By the middle of December, Monsoon starts retreating and shifts in southwards direction towards Sri Lanka.
