During winters, the weather over the northwestern plains i.e. Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, North Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh is mostly governed by the Western Disturbances travelling across the northern hills and their induced weather system over the northern plains.
The combined effect of these weather systems helps the plains of Northwest India in witnessing good rain and thundershower activities during winters.
At present also, similar situation is occurring. An active Western Disturbance is seen over North Pakistan region and its induced cyclonic circulation lies over Northwest Rajasthan.
Thus, in wake of the above weather systems, by late night of February 5, light rains are expected to commence over the northwestern plains including Delhi NCR region.
Further, from February 6, as these weather systems will strengthen and shift, rains over most parts of Northwest India will intensify and between February 6 and 8, moderate rains with few heavy spells are likely to lash many parts over the northwestern plains.
In fact, during this period the foothills such as Jammu, Pathankot, Patiala, Jalandhar, Chandigarh, Mohali, Bareilly, Bahraich and Panchkula will mainly witness fairly widespread rain and thundershower activities.
However, around February 8, with the systems eastward movement, rains will start vacating from parts of Rajasthan, South Punjab and Haryana. Meanwhile, the intensity and spread of rains will increase over eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh.
Hailstorm activity may also be a possibility in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, North Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
In wake of such heavy rains, maximum temperatures will drop significantly. Therefore, cold day conditions may also take place over few places of Northwest India. But a rising trend will be observed in the minimum temperatures.
