Monsoon performance in Punjab so far

This winter season, northwestern plains have not experienced any significant weather activities. Due to which, currently all the states in Northwest India are largely rain deficient, barring West Rajasthan region that managed to witness few scattered spells of rain.

However, the situation all set to change as a fresh Western Disturbance is seen over North Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir region. Its induced cyclonic circulation is seen over West Rajasthan and adjoining Central Pakistan.

In wake of the above weather system, during the last 24 hours, parts of Rajasthan and foothills of Punjab have already observed some rain and thundershower activities. In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Sunday, Amritsar recorded 4.7 mm of rain.

Now starting today evening onwards, rain and thundershower activities will increase both in terms of intensity and spread, covering more parts of Northwest India including Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Further, from January 22, light to moderate rains and thundershowers will occur over all the northwestern plains of India.

Places such as Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Chandigarh, Bhatinda, Ambala, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Hisar, Bhiwani, Jind, Rohtak, Panipat, Sri Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, Jhunjhunu, Sikar, Jaipur, Lucknow, Bareilly, Moradabad, Muzaffarnagar and Agra are likely to experience rain and thundershower activities.

This rainy spell is expected to continue for the coming two to three days i.e. till January 23. January 24 onwards, as the weather systems will be moving eastwards, scattered rains would still continue over parts of Uttar Pradesh but would reduce over other parts.

During this approaching, isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh may also witness hailstorm activity.

Talking about the temperatures, due to clouding and continuous rains, maximums over most places will drop significantly, which may even lead to cold day condition over few places. Cold day condition is declared when a city records its maximum temperature below 16˚C. Meanwhile, minimum temperatures will follow a rising trend.
